As a result of the presence of chivalry, courtly love gave rise to an increased production and contemplation of romantic prose. The presence of chivalry in Medieval Culture is exemplified in the representation of a just and moral knight facing temptation and conflict in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Reflected within the texts of the time–the ways in which characters are affected by loyalty, duty, and honor–the chivalric code was both a necessary platform for knighthood and good moral standing. In the Twelfth Century, there arose a strong presence of chivalry in Medieval society which quickly inhabited the literature of the time the chivalric code was a moral code, or rather, a code of conduct bound to duty, honor, and justice. The Church often wielded more power than the often-weak feudal monarchies that characterized medieval society. ![]() Christianity was legalized by the Roman Empire during the Fourth Century, and as a result, education as well as laws were overseen by the Church. The Catholic Church created schools with an intensive curriculum founded upon the education of grammar, rhetoric, Latin, astronomy, philosophy and math. On the continent, the development of Medieval literature–stemming from the preservation of culture and heroic adventures within epic poems–is a direct result of Charlemagne’s desire to educate his people in 800, which was only made possible through an emphasis on the teachings of the Catholic Church. Knights were to fear God and maintain His Church. They always had to obey those who were placed in authority and were never allowed to refuse a challenge from an equal. Knights not only vowed to protect the weak but also vowed to guard the honor of all fellow knights. Knights were required to tell the truth at all times and always respect the honour of women. Knights vowed to be loyal, generous, and "of noble bearing". Knights not only had to be strong but they were also extremely disciplined and were expected to use their power to protect the weak and defenseless. All knights needed to have the strength and skills to fight wars in the Middle Ages. The Knight's Code of Chivalry was a moral system that stated all knights should protect others who can not protect themselves, such as widows, children, and elders. Always and everywhere be right and good against evil and injustice.Perform all duties that agree with the laws of God.Even if the knights knew death was near, they would rather die fighting than show weakness A single coward could discourage an entire army. Chivalry, or the Chivalric Code, is the traditional code of conduct associated with the medieval institution of knighthood. Essentially, a chivalric knight is a Christian military soldier.
