When you use custom furnishings, you can ensure that your space is unlike any other. "It's less predictable and more interesting, especially when the patterns are so dissimilar." Six neutral dining chairs are offset by two zebra print armchairs in this room. "Mismatched furniture just enhances everything," Fisher says. Mix and match furniture, lighting, and artwork to give your space a unique look. "It's critical to create an environment that makes the host feel at ease so that they can extend that feeling to their guests." The vintage Danish Kai Christensen chairs in this room were previously owned by the homeowners but have been reupholstered to fit the new space. "Start with personal items," Ellen Nystrom of Nystrom Design advises. Reuse or repurpose cherished pieces from previous spaces, whether it's a work of art, an inherited piece of furniture, or antique decorative items. ? "We framed vintage signs from an old deli to add whimsy and personality here." If your dining room lacks natural light, consider painting the walls white, incorporating light-coloured artwork on the walls, or incorporating mirrors to enlarge the space. "Art does not have to be expensive, and it can be an excellent way to curate a space," he says. Decorate the windows to further frame them. Mendelson recommends placing the breakfast table near windows whenever possible so that natural light can greet you. Install as many eye-level light sources as possible, such as sconces. Use wall washers to highlight the art and interesting surfaces on the perimeter wall to create a glow. Chandeliers should be hung low-28 to 34 inches above the table. To avoid dark shadows on guests' faces, avoid using downlights whenever possible, especially directly over chairs. "Lighting is extremely important," Eberlein adds. The shimmering wallcovering, large artwork, and eye-catching chandeliers all work together in the space. "The dramatic chandeliers, with geometric glass pendants echoing the room's shape, complete the desired feeling of the space-awe," she says. Lighting, according to interior designer Paula Grace Halewski, is what ties this room together. "Because dining rooms typically have more hard surfaces and fewer fabric-covered surfaces, decorate these planes where one's gaze naturally travels."īeautiful lighting fixtures can elevate an ordinary dining room to the extraordinary. "Don't pass up the chance to create interesting textures and surfaces in the major horizontal planes: the floor, table, and ceiling," Eberlein adds. "The juxtaposition of a traditional colour palette executed in a contemporary way helps this space stand out from other dining rooms," says Courtnay Tartt Elias, Creative Tonic's creative director and principal. To enhance the drama of this space, Creative Tonic used a marine-grade high-gloss paint finish by Fine Paints of Europe. Finally, each dining chair is upholstered in a different colour, and guests are encouraged to choose the chair that best matches their personality.Ĭolours and textures can completely transform a space, and the walls are a great place to experiment, whether with bold paint or textured wall covering. "We couldn't help but use the multicoloured bubbles-within-bubbles as a freeform, as well as a playful light fixture to round out the room," she adds. This dining room's bold colour palette complements the owner's bubbly, colourful personality. "Make aesthetic connections and personal references whenever possible," Eberlein agrees. "Anything that makes you happy can be displayed on your walls." "Use your hobbies or interests as inspiration to create your one-of-a-kind space," says interior designer Jennifer Fisher. A space's colour scheme, artwork, or accessories can reveal information about the homeowner, providing guests with a more personalised dining experience. "Part of the room's uniqueness stems from how we handled the faceted ceiling." The team arranged panelling on the ceiling in an unusual pattern, adding texture and colour to the space.Ī one-of-a-kind dining room makes a statement and leaves a lasting impression, but it should also elicit conversation and reflect the homeowner's personality. "Think about what will spark a great conversation," says Gideon Mendelson, founder of the Mendelson Group. Once the table is in place, arrange the rest of the furnishings and accessories to complement this focal point.Ĭreate a space that piques guests' interest and encourages conversation, whether through unique artwork, eye-catching wallpaper, or custom furnishings. When the dining table is the focal point of the room, guests are more likely to sit down and converse with one another. "Make the table the centre of attention," says Tim Button, partner and co-owner of Stedila Design. ![]()
